Van Living Thoughts

Does the World Look Down on People Living in Vans?

One day while I was at work, I happened to mention my idea of van living and travel to one of my coworkers.  She instantly burst out laughing.  Then she proceeded to say “Larry, You are Crazy”.  Now, I’ve been working with this lady for a number of years, and we talk about all sorts of things like getting out of debt, selling stuff and living on less, minimalism, etc, and she seems to be on board with those things, but she thinks I’m crazy because I want to travel around and see the country in a van.  That’s interesting because the people living in vans embrace all of the things that she would normally be on board with, but then she makes a distinction when it comes to me and my van idea and calls me crazy.  I just don’t quite get it.

What is it about people that live and travel in their vans that makes everyone, even people that are more nonconformist than usual, look down on us?

Tell me what you think about people living in vans.

  1. My husband and I are planning to drive around the US three years from now. He is working on an online business that should give us enough income to thrive… We are not doing it out of lack of money or jobs, we just want to see the country before we have babies and settle down. We plan to be on the road for 5 years or so.
I think people laugh at us because they are afraid and envious…mostly envious… Not sure though :) Good Luck to you!!

  2. I’m twenty years old. For the past couple years all I have been able to think about is doing something totally out of the norm. I also want to get away from the materialistic society and get more in touch with nature. When I mention this to most people they act as though I’m a meth addict or something. I think the real reason they have that reaction is because they are afraid of being original, and of original people. They think if they don’t react that way that there is something wrong with them.
